What Is a Squid Jig?

A squid jig is a specialized fishing lure designed specifically for catching squid. Unlike traditional fishing lures that use single, double, or treble hooks, squid jigs feature a crown of sharp, barbless needle-like hooks that are designed to snag a squid's tentacles as it attacks or grabs the lure.

How to Fish a Squid Jig

Squid jigs are commonly fished by casting and retrieving or by vertically jigging from a boat, dock, bridge, jetty, or pier. Slow lifts, gentle twitches, and controlled drops help imitate the movement of small baitfish and shrimp, making the lure more appealing to feeding squid. Many anglers prefer glow and brightly colored squid jigs when fishing at night around lights, where squid often gather to feed.

Available in a variety of sizes, sink rates, and color patterns, squid jigs allow anglers to match local conditions and target squid effectively throughout the season. Whether you're fishing for bait or fresh seafood for the table, a quality squid jig is an essential tool for successful squid fishing.
