What Is A Striped Bass?

Striped bass (Morone saxatilis) inhabit a wide range of coastal waters along the eastern United States and Canada, from the St. Lawrence River in Canada down to the Gulf of Mexico. They are particularly abundant in the mid-Atlantic and northeastern U.S., with hotspots in the Chesapeake Bay, Delaware River, Hudson River, and Cape Cod waters. Chesapeake Bay serves as one of the primary spawning grounds for the species, contributing significantly to their overall population. During warmer months, stripers often move northward along the coast, following schools of baitfish, while in colder months, they may migrate southward or move to deeper offshore waters. Some populations are more resident in nature, staying near local estuaries or river systems, while others undertake long migrations along the coast. Anglers can commonly find striped bass near rocky shorelines, jetties, bridges, and tidal estuaries, where they feed on menhaden, herring, and other small fish.
