🎣 Fishing FAQs
Browse common fishing questions below.
7/0-9/0 non-offset (inline) circle hooks work best and are in compliance with regulations. Read our blog for more information on Circle Hooks.
A 9ft-12ft surf rod with a fast action tip is ideal for long casts. Pair it with a strong spinning reel loaded with at least 20lb braid. Shop surf rods.
Rinse with freshwater after every saltwater trip and apply a light reel oil to moving parts. Consider using a protective spray. Check out reel maintenance kits.
Live eels, bunker chunks, and soft plastics work best. Match the bait to the conditions for the best results. See top lures.
Use long-nose pliers or a dehooker tool to gently remove the hook. If deep-hooked, consider cutting the line. Shop dehookers.
For targeting marlin, tuna, and wahoo, anglers use 50lb+ class setups. Stand-up rods rated 50-130lb work well.
Pass your main line through an egg sinker and a glass bead, then tie it to a barrel swivel. Attach a leader with a hook to the other end. Retrieve slowly with occasional rod snaps.
Clams, squid, and bunker chunks work well for surf fishing. Artificial lures like saltwater jigs can also be effective.
Look for cuts, troughs, and sandbars where baitfish gather. Deeper pockets in the surf often hold fish.
Early morning and late evening are best due to cooler temperatures and active fish feeding.
Use a longer rod, aerodynamic lures, and practice a smooth casting motion.
The best line-to-line knot for attaching leaders are the FG Knot, the Alberto (Double Albright), and Uni-to-Uni Knot. These are listed in order of most difficult. These all provide a strong yet small connection between braided main line and leader material. Please understand that a properly tied pull tested knot is the most important factor. It's better to tie a secure knot properly than a technically advanced knot improperly.
Use squid jigs with glow-in-the-dark finishes for night fishing.
For saltwater, use a corrosion-resistant spinning or baitcasting reel. Check out our reels.
Fluorocarbon is the best choice as it’s nearly invisible underwater and resistant to abrasion.
Use a heavier sinker or switch to lures to avoid the floating seaweed.
Use line management tools and store reels properly. Choose high-quality lines like braid or fluorocarbon for durability.
Use small minnows, or a jig with Gulp!. Also small swimming plugs/jerkbaits can be effective in shallow water. Try fishing deeper pools along the beach where fluke tend to hide. Also fish the channels in the bays and inlets, as well as lumps, ridges, wrecks and reefs in the ocean.
Three classic fish catching striped bass lures and fish head favorites are Super Strike Little Neck Poppers, Diamond Jigs, & a Bucktail. Shop our striped bass lure collection.
Spring and fall are ideal, as fish are most active during these times. In winter, focus on deeper waters.
Braid is stronger, thinner, and more sensitive, while monofilament is more forgiving and stretches. Use braid for sensitivity and monofilament for beginners. Shop lines.
Store rods vertically or horizontally with a rod rack to avoid warping. Keep them in a cool, dry place to protect them from the elements.
Bluefish love topwater lures like diamond jigs. They are aggressive feeders, so use fast-moving lures with a shiny jig will get the job done. Just be careful of their sharp teeth! Shop diamond jigs.
Use a good auger to drill holes, and bring ice fishing rods with appropriate lures. Dress warmly and check ice thickness before venturing out.
For saltwater, a corrosion resistant reel is very important. In the buying process first determine the style of reel you want and need to match the rod and the intended purpose. Then determine the line test, capacity and drag required for the purpose. From there, shop the price points/quality that fit your budget. Please contact us for advice and guidance when buying a new fishing reel. Browse reels.

Catch and release involves safely returning fish to the water after catching them. Use barbless hooks and handle fish gently to minimize injury.
Wet your hands before handling a fish to avoid damaging their scales. For larger fish, use a landing net and a fish gripper tool. Never hang a fish vertically that you intend to release to prevent internal organ damage. Shop fish grippers.
The Palomar knot is strong and easy to tie, especially for braided lines but we suggest anglers to first learn the Uni knot. It is very universal and can be tied in light or heavy line, mono or braid, and can be used to tie two lines together via the Uni-to-Uni Knot. Learn how to tie it, practice it and perfect it to ensure a angling success.
A medium-action rod, around 7'0", is perfect for Fluke fishing. Be sure to match the rods lure rating with your preferred weight range to best match you. Shop Fluke rods.
To avoid twists, always retrieve line onto the spool with light or moderate tension. The number one reason for line twists and tangles/wind knots is due to loose line on the spool when casting. Prevent loose line and you'll prevent tangles. In the case of a trolling situation when casting a lure that spins, be sure to add a quality swivel to help reduce line twists. Shop Swivels.
Always check local fishing regulations for size and bag limits. Use a fish measuring tool to confirm the size of your catch. Shop measuring tools.
Without a doubt live surf clams for black drum in New Jersey's bays and surf. Anglers have been known to fish Sand Fleas, and Blue Claw crabs that can be effective around the moon when they shed.
Spinning reels are easier for beginners, while baitcasting reels offer better accuracy and control for more experienced anglers.
Popular rigs include the Carolina rig, Texas rig, and drop shot rig, each used for specific types of fishing.
Rod choice depends on the fish species and fishing environment. Light rods are for freshwater, while heavy-duty rods are suited for saltwater and deep-sea fishing.
Fly fishing uses a special casting technique and lightweight fly lures to catch fish. It’s popular for trout, salmon, and other species in freshwater.
Use hook covers or protectors when storing hooks, and always keep them organized in a tackle box. Plano offers a great selection of tackle organization and management products, shop now.
While fishing at night is more challenging, it can be more rewarding. Many species are more active at night and many areas have less anglers. More fish, less people fishing makes it more fun for you.
First and foremost, if setting out to target Sharks, anglers must be preparred with the right equiptment. However, incidental catches occur. In these cases, an angler should use the utmost care to protect onseself and others, as well as the shark. In some cases, that may involve safely removing the hook with a long dehooker and some cases it may be better to cut off the line as close to the hook as possible. Here is a link to a long dehooker.
Use a heavier sinker or weight to keep bait at the bottom. Cast in the direction of the current for better results.
Learn about the species you’re targeting, choose the right bait, and fish during peak times like dawn and dusk.
A spinning reel's failure to oscillate up and down is most likely due to an internal failure. Most likely one or more of the following are damaged; the crosswind gear, crosswind block or the main gear. There is a slim chance that the main shaft is bent and that is binding on the down stroke but my first guess, sight unseen is the internal gear issue. If you are looking to repair DYI at home let us know and we can ship you the needed part. First we would need you to take apart and send a couple photos. From there we can provide further assistance and help identify the issue. The easiest method to fix would be to box it up and send to us for repair.
